"And people saw that every sort of beauty, every sort of love was from the gods, and they became free and bold, and they grew wings."---"Love has no other objective beyond itself; nature is also devoid of any shadow of the idea of finality. The laws of nature are of a completely different category to the laws of God, so called, and men. The law of nature is not that a given tree must produce its fruit, but that in certain conditions it will produce a fruit, and in others it will not, and will ev [...]

My translation wasn't the best but the text seemed to be generally intact. I really REALLY wish I could read this in the original Russian. It was splendidly progressive, it had some wonderful lines, and it even had a happy ending (that happens in Russian stories?!). I heartily recommend this. Be warned though, the passage of time in this book is hard to follow. Paragraph breaks can sometimes represent hours or months.

This is one of those books that deserves to be so much more than it is. While some of this may be due to the translation, Wings is a poorly-paced and hard-to-follow novel with an overabundance of characters and scenes that don't really go anywhere. Because of the sloppy presentation, even despite the significance of this book, it's hard to recommend it.

One really wants to like this - if only to refute the current persecution of gays in Russia by proving "yes, we have always existed - even in pre-Soviet Russia." But the novel really doesn't work on its own. it is klunky, not compelling.

Justin Torres wrote an article in Out praising this work. I did not read this edition, but the version in Selected Prose & Poetry. Short but a bit difficult to get through, mainly due to so many characters with unusual Russian names and nicknames.

The first part was sublime and, while they were certainly good, the latter two did not live up to expectation.
