I have always been drawn to Rodin, so I could not resist when I found this historical fiction about him written in 1963. It is not a literary masterpiece, but I was nonetheless drawn into the tumultuous world of Rodin and his impressionist artist friends. It is written with the historical detail of a biography, but the freedom of fiction allows for dialogue and inner monologues to recreate the passions surrounding Rodin's family, lovers and artistic motivations. If you are intrigued by Rodin's l [...]

Dialogue is wooden and unconvincing, but the broad facts of the artists' lives are presumably accurate and certainly interesting. Rodin seems to have managed to make his own life and those of his lovers and family, thoroughly miserable. In this account, misery, stress, depression, raging emotion, poverty, starvation seemed to be essential components of many of the major late 19th C. French artists' lives.

I read this book after visiting Rodin museum in Paris two years ago. At that time, I didn't know much about life of Rodin or his artwork, but was still fascinated by the sculptures I saw. The book explained a lot. The begining of the book was disappointing as the dialogues were kind of unnatural, and the story seemed to be too simplistic. But these things emproved while reading. I'd say the main thought of the book is that Rodin was a genius, therefore unpolite, wicked, ruthless behaviour in per [...]

Truth: I only read this because the author shares my surname. Or, I only read his book I, Rembrandt because of the surname and then I read this one because I liked that one. As historical/biographical fiction (a genre I'm not overly fond of) goes, it's not bad at all. He really gets inside Rodin's head, or seems to, anyway. This is the best of his books, I believe. He really doesn't deserve his obscurity. He's easily as good, if not better, than a lot of better-known authors of biographical fict [...]

The truth of the matter here is that I am reading the Reader's Digest Condensed book. One of four condensed books in that volume. Weird idea. But I remember these from when I was a kid, so I BookMooched an entire year of them as research for a story. I thought it could be a way to get snapshot of what main-stream America was thinking. The book is good, but I can't help but wonder what was cut. The "condensed" version is 150 pages. Perhaps these books were something along the lines of Cliff Notes [...]

Historical fiction based on the life of the artist, Auguste Rodin. I didn't finish it (though I did give it 430 pages) - not because I didn't enjoy reading it, but because I couldn't be nice while reading it. However much I admire his work, his life made me so mad that I think my baby got sour milk while I was reading it. (I read it while nursing.)

I love biographies and I liked this one but I must admit there were times when this book was a little difficult to get through. I picked up several other books while I was reading this one but continued to come back. I had to finish it to see how it ended. A lot of the dialog is a bit far fetched but still, I'm glad I read it.

Čital som knihu prvýkrát ako dieťa a vyvolala vo mne celoživotnú fascináciu sochárstvom. Prečítal som po dvoch desaťročiach znova a už ma trochu vyrušovali neustále pochybnosti nad tým, čo sú fakty a čo je fikcia, ale nakoniec prevážila zasa tá neuveriteľná fascinácia sochárstvom.

Historical fiction- about the sculptor A. Rodin. I tend to like books about artists, and historical fiction, so I really enjoyed this. Learned a whole lot about Rodin, the times, and his work. Putting it in context made his work a whole lot more interesting for me.

I really enjoyed this book. It took me to the world of Rodin's art, and it was very nice to observe his relationships with Degas, Monet, Zola who were very interesting to me as well. If you are into 19 century art then this book is must read.

It was recommended by a co-worker when I started my first job when I was 21. I thought at the time that it was a great book that had me searching other works on artists of Rodin's time. I especially loved being introduced to Rodin.

I love Rodin as an artisthis passions sometimes lead him to self destructive personal paths with his numerous lover/models. An interesting work about this brilliant artist.

Dlouhé, náročné, ale velmi poutavě napsané vyprávění o jednom tvrdohlavém asociálovi a kráse tvarů a moci hlíny.

This is an excellent novel about Rodin-the greatest sculptor since Michelango. I read it many many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.

interesting account of the life of Auguste Rodin who introduced the nude statue into a prudish world in the late 1800's.
