I've never been interested in reading or read a book of the fantasy genre before, but I was pleasantly surprised. All characters were fleshed out extremely well; for example, I nearly cried when Raistlin and Caramon lost both their parents, I could understand Raistlin's jealously at Caramon stealing his dream girl. Raistlin's competitiveness with Caramon is the classic nerdy brother vs. attractive/jock brother conflict. Eccentric characters such as Flint the dwarf and Tas the kender made me laug [...]

Here is a good example of what would have happened if Harry Potter turned evil. This is a great book to read if you are sick of mamby pamsy wizards and want to read a good book about a sickly kid who turns into someone who is “not a very nice person” (as said by one of the Hobbit-like characters in a different book from this series). The only flaw is that while it is quite informative about the character of Raistlin Majere (the golden guy on the cover), we do not get to see him use much magi [...]

Having not read any dragonlance books prior to reading this one, I approached this with the unique perspective of having no pre-formed bias for the characters. For those that don't know, this book serves as an origin story for some of the main characters in the dragonlance books, specifically for the physically weak but intellectual Raistlin. Overall I found the book to be an enjoyable read. The main cast are an entertaining bunch, each personality greatly contrasting the others. Though co-autho [...]

The Dragonlance series was the second set of fiction that I read on my own for enjoyment as a child. I fell utterly in love with them, and read them many times. Discovering that they're now available in audio, I decided to revisit them. I discovered that many more books were written in the world after I outgrew my interest, and decided to read them in the order of the story's chronology. It was an interesting experience starting with The Soulforge. Though it was new to me, it was very nostalgic. [...]

The origin story of Raistlin Majere, of Chronicles and Legends fame. This book covers Raistlin's early life, from childhood through his test at the tower of high sorcery. Fans of this fascinating character will enjoy this look at his rise from obscurity. 3 stars.

Raistlin Majere, greatest wizard of all time! Becoming interested in Raistlin when I first heard the song “The Soulforged” by the group Blind Guardian, many years passed before I read the first Dragonlance book, Dragons ofAutumn Twilight. That novel further grew my interest in Raistlin, as wizards have always been my favoured class in video games and D&D. Finally reading this book, more than 10 years after discovering who this man was, was the greatest treat I have given myself, in a lit [...]

In addition to the wonderful times in Dragons of Autumn Twilight, The Soulforge tells us why Raistlin is the way he is. And it also touches on the subtlety of evil: why something is done can be more important that what is done. As enjoyable as learning about Raistlin's childhood is, it's just as much fun to read about the companions first meeting each other: Tanis, Sturm, Caramon, Raistlin, Tasslehoff, Flint, and Kitiara. But Margaret Weis goes deeper than telling a story about those people as c [...]

Grazie a [...]

It took 6 books but I finally really got into the story. I had a hard time putting the book down however, it got awfully creepy and uncomfortable when a grown man was sexualizing a 13 year old girl. Not only that but he was played off as a "good" character. As if it was okay because he was "old fashioned". At that point I wanted to rip the stupid thing in half. So 3 stars.

If you love Raistlin and the original trilogy, you will love this book. It incorporates the Companions in an appropriate way that does not distract from Raistlin's story. I also appreciate how Weis' writing has evolved. I've read this book twice now and I will probably read it again.

I enjoyed this book. I've read it at least twice now, once about 15 years ago, and my latest read-through very recently. The origin story of Raistlin Majere sheds light on a dark, but also very complicated character.

The Soulforge is a great prelude to the War of the Lance trilogy and foreshadows what Raistlin Majere will eventually become.

that turning point in life when you meet destiny, it spits in your face and you just punch it back for fun. This is the tale of the greatest wizard ever.

The Soulforge is the story of Raistlin Majere's childhood years, a more in-depth account of his fathers and mother's depression and death than was told in Dragons of Winter Night. His bullying is emphasized more than the small record we were given in Test of the Twins. This story tells of his introduction to the mage-school where his "soul is forged in the crucible of magic."In my opinion, this is one of the best Dragonlance books ever written! It excellently answered some of my questions about [...]

This book basically covers the first half of Raistlin's massive alignment shift from what appears to be Neutral Good to Chaotic Neutral. Events described in chronologically later books shift his moral pendulum further towards the Neutral Evil/Chaotic Evil side, and perhaps back to Chaotic Good towards the end of Test of the TwinsIn other words, Raistlin is incredibly complex and enigmatic and this book shows us how that personality was shaped through events in his childhood, adolescence, and ear [...]

I'm something of a fan of the Dragonlance mythos in general; the Chronicles intrigued me and seemed quite well done, and now from one of the authors of those books comes this first in a new series, the Raistlin Chronicles. When I saw that there was indeed going to be a "Raistlin Chronicles" I was highly interested. After all, Raistlin is in my opinion and in the opinions of many other Dragonlance readers the most well thought out of the protagonist characters, the most complicated in terms of pe [...]

I have never read any gaming related fiction, and would be reluctant to admit it if I did. It has a dubious reputation. But then so does the pulp science fiction I love so much, and I have no problem admitting to enjoying that. Since this was a bargain audiobook on Audible, and since I used to illustrate products for TSR (the previous Dungeons and Dragons producers) back in the 1990s, I thought I'd give it a try for nostalgia's sake and out of curiosity. Boy, was my preconception off!The writing [...]

This was a lot more slippery and sloppy than I remember. Perhaps Hickman is the cleaner voice behind Chronicles and Legends, or there was just a better editor in the 80s. Weis clearly doesn't know how to give "age appropriatness" to her story. 16 Raistlin spoke like 28 year old Raistlin. 13 year old Caramon spoke like 25 year old Caramon. 6 year old Raistlin was a creepy little guy, but some of this stuff was just too unbelievable. And cushioning the early chapters with hints of Raistlin's later [...]

Raistlin was always my favourite in Legends and in Chronicles so I knew I would love this book. The SoulForge is written from Raistlin's perspective and how he became a wizard. None of this is ever explained in the previous books until now. It's full of delicious sarcasm from Raist and silly commentary from Taz who is my second favourite character. Soulforge also explains why the twins turned out the way they did.Favourite quotes: "No just and honorable god would have played such a cruel joke as [...]
